The Pupil Premium was introduced in April 2011, based on January 2011 school census figures for pupils registered as eligible for FSM. The Pupil Premium is additional funding given to schools in order to help raise the achievement of pupils who receive free school meals (FSM).

The Government believes that the Pupil Premium is the best way to address disadvantage and help the pupils who need it most. The intention is that schools will use the funding to narrow the attainment gap between pupils from different economic backgrounds. It is for each school to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils in their care.
